Double Shooting at a Florida University Prompts Parents, Students to Ask For More Security

Parents want more safety measures after a deadly double shooting at Florida Memorial University over the weekend.

After two men were shot and killed Saturday at Florida Memorial University, students and parents are asking for more safety measures.

Police said the men got into an argument and then shot at each other at a party on campus.

“We just heard shots and everybody just running,” said student Jermiah George to WSVN.

CBS Miami said police have not said if the two men were students. However, students told the news outlet one of them was and they believe there was a third person with a gun.

The fact that an armed non-student could have possibly got on the campus has caused some parents to worry.

“But you let someone on campus who’s not a student with a weapon?” the aunt of a student questioned.

In September the university was the site of another shooting; nobody was injured.

However, students told CBS Miami they do not feel like the university has done anything to enhance security since that shooting.

“To help our students, faculty, and staff cope with this tragedy, grief counselors are available through the Student Development Center. Effective immediately, multiple group discussions will be held daily,” a FMU statement read.
