No Injuries after Shot Fired at Suburban Albuquerque High School

No one was injured and a suspect is in custody, police and school officials said.

A shot was fired on the grounds of V. Sue Cleveland High School in the community of Rio Rancho, N.M., on Thursday, the first anniversary of the Parkland shooting. No one was injured and a suspect is in custody, police and school officials said.

Rio Rancho Police Chief Stewart Steele told the Associated Press that a male student suspected of using a handgun to fire the shot before school began had been taken into custody. The suspect was being questioned by authorities but a motive was not immediately identified.


The shooting took place at about 7 a.m. before school was scheduled to start. Officials believe the shot was fired inside a hallway. According to authorities, the suspect fled the school after shooting and left the weapon behind. He was caught running away from the campus.

According to police, the high school was evacuated. School officials said via Twitter that all students were safe and the other schools in the district were open.

“It was extremely scary,” Steele said. “We just thank God it ended the way it did.”
