Minneapolis school shooting

Student in Custody After Reports of Shots Fired in Minn. Middle School

Plymouth Middle School, located in Plymouth, Minn., went into lockdown and a student was taken into police custody on Monday morning following reports of shots fired inside the school. No injuries were reported, and all students have been confirmed safe by Robbinsdale Area Schools.

According to Plymouth Police Chief Erik Fadden, police responded to the sound of gunshots in the building at 8:44 a.m. on Monday. One person, confirmed to be a student, was taken into custody. The scene is otherwise contained, and police are not looking for additional suspects. Officials recovered the weapon but did not resort to use of force, he said.

An investigation is ongoing. The student’s name has not yet been released.

Interim Superintendent Dr Stephanie Burrage said that several students witnessed the suspect fire multiple gunshots in a school hallway. Burrage said that the first responder to the incident was a staff member, then a school resource officer.

“Any child who has to witness that at school, it’s a challenging day,” she said.

Parents have been invited to come pick up their children in the parking lot of nearby Armstrong High School. They have been asked not to call the school but to come directly to the designated pickup spot. The school remains on lockdown, and there will be police presence throughout the halls for the rest of the day.

“We are all living in tender times,” said Burrage. “And in tender times, we need to make sure we’re having a lot of conversations. It’s not a fun day for anyone that has to manage a gun in school. But we all worked together, and we will make sure that we have a positive outcome from this incident today.”
