Because of its location, California State University, Fresno benefits from not only its Campus Police Department, but an additional three law enforcement agencies. Jurisdiction over Fresno State is shared by the Fresno State Police Department, Fresno Police Department, Clovis Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.
Once the decertification is finalized, the BYU PD would basically have the same powers as a private security company. The BYU PD would not be recognized as a law enforcement agency by Utah’s POST or other departments, and its employees would not have the power to arrest people.
Police had been called to the campus 18 times as of Feb. 1, and police reports showed that a teacher was hurt in October while trying to stop a fight between two students. In early February the school committee voted to create a subcommittee focused on the problems at the school.
Texas City Independent School District has made big, bold changes to its campus security and safety following the May 18, 2018, shooting at Santa Fe High School, which left nine students and one teacher dead. “It had a huge impact on us,” Superintendent of Texas City Schools Rodney Cavness said. “That’s real close to us.”
“If something happens, we just cannot get police in time to schools in a rural community our size,” Superintendent Jeremy Gulley said.
“We wanted to figure out a solution for stemming workplace violence by getting ahead of the curve because it's a national trend, and, unfortunately, we are not immune to it,” said Todd Miller, public safety and security specialist for SSM's St. Louis region, which includes eight hospitals.
