Male Student Stabbed Female in Oklahoma School Auditorium

A 14-year-old boy stabbed a girl of the same age in the middle of an all school assembly.

A 14-year-old boy has been taken into custody after "silently stabbing a female student 9 to 11 times" during a morning assembly in an Oklahoma school's auditorium, according to local police.

The incident happened in the middle of the high school's back-to-school assembly in the school's auditorium. Students, staff and faculty were present during the stabbing and several students and staff pinned the suspect down until police could respond to the school.

"They were having an all school assembly inside the performing arts center when, for some reason, the male stood up and started stabbing the female student," Mark Opgrande, spokesperson for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, told reporters during an afternoon press conference.

The female victim, identified as a 14-year-old student, temporarily lost consciousness after the incident but was stable through surgery. She sustained injuries to her arm, hand and face.

The school in Luther, Okla. does not have metal detectors or a resource officer on campus, but did place the campus on lockdown while police investigated. Classes resumed a short while later. Counselors will be made available for students on Friday, the day after the stabbing.
