TX District Requires Students to Wear ID Badges

"We started this semester with student ID cards as another form of an added security measure for our campus as well as helping us out in a lot of different ways," said Dr. Jimmy Shuck, Principal at S.C. Lee Junior High School.

In an effort to keep students safe, Copperas Cove Independent School District is now requiring all Junior High students to wear an identification badge at all times.

"We started this semester with student ID cards as another form of an added security measure for our campus as well as helping us out in a lot of different ways," said Dr. Jimmy Shuck, Principal at S.C. Lee Junior High School.

The new ID cards let staff know that a student is allowed on the campus, as well as indicating their grade level by color coding, according to KXXV. Students also use their ID card to get lunch in the cafeteria and check books out from the library.

"It helps with the identification of students in ensuring students are in the right areas. Also, when we do fire drills depending on when a fire drill occurs, it allows for people or staff members that are on campus to be able to identify students to make sure we're able to get an accurate account and identify students that are present or if they're missing," Shuck said.

Making the ID cards takes only a few minutes. Shuck said that wearing the ID cards helps students prepare for carrying ID in the future.

"A lot of the area High Schools students are wearing ID cards there, as adults we have our driver’s license, we don't necessarily have to wear those around our neck but in a lot of the work forces where you go to in different jobs they are going more and more to wearing or having some form of ID, this is the same thing for our kids," Shuck said.
