Oklahoma District to Implement ID System for School Safety

All district visitors will be required to present a valid state-issued ID in order to get a visitor pass and enter the school building. Upon scanning the state ID, school staff will be alerted as to whether the visitor is allowed on campus.

Cushing Public Schools will soon install “School Safe ID” kiosks in all five of the district’s buildings. The system will let staff know whether a visitor is supposed to be on campus.

The School Safe ID kiosks will be in use beginning Feb. 18. All district visitors will be required to present a valid state-issued ID in order to get a visitor pass and enter the school building. Upon scanning the state ID, school staff will be alerted as to whether the visitor is allowed on campus.

"Anything you can do to increase security for your students and staff and help parents feel sure their children are in a safe environment where they can learn effectively, those are things that get my attention," said Koln Knight, Cushing Public School Superintendent.

School Safe ID checks visitor identification against the national database of registered sex offenders.

The system also stores information to let staff know who is allowed to pick up each student.

“There is always that chance that a child could go home with the wrong person,” Knight said. “As long as parents and guardians keep their information up to date in our student information system, it alleviates that concern to make sure that they are going home with the right guardian.”

The district paid $17,000 for the system.

“It’s a little inconvenience in the beginning for our folks to get used to it, but it is well worth it,” Knight said. “I believe, and I hope our patrons appreciate the extra lengths that we go to in making sure children and our staff are safe.”
