Illinois Sheriff’s Office, School District Collaborate to Launch Pilot Safety Program

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Fremont School District 79 are collaborating on a pilot safety program for schools.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Fremont School District 79 are collaborating on a pilot safety program for schools.

As part of the pilot program, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office will have access to data about any of the four campuses in the district via a special internal website. The information will include administrator contact info, school enrollment numbers and information about students with special needs who may need extra assistance during an evacuation.

The Sheriff’s Office will also have school floor plans and photos of all school entrances and exits. Law enforcement will also be able to connect to any live video surveillance cameras inside school buildings.

“Time is of the essence in any type of emergency situation,” said Bill Robertson, Fremont School District 79 Superintendent. “We are grateful to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for the opportunity to serve as a pilot District to ensure that we are all prepared as much as possible should an emergency arise. We’d also like to thank the LCSO for its ongoing collaboration and presence around our schools as we continue to place a priority on safety.”

Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said that every second matters in a critical incident, and can even be the difference between life and death.

Idleburg said that once the pilot program is running smoothly, the Sheriff’s Office plans to implement similar safety plans with other school districts in Lake County.
