School Board Discusses New Emergency Pickup Locations

The Seminole County School Board is looking to designate new locations where students can be picked up by parents in case of an emergency.

The Seminole County School Board is looking to designate new locations where parents can pick up their students in case of an emergency incident. The discussion follows an incident a few weeks ago, after which traffic piled up as parents tried to figure out where to meet up with their children.

On March 13, Lake Mary High School was locked down after a student fatally shot herself on campus. In the wake of this incident, traffic accumulated outside the school as parents tried to get to their children and students tried to figure out where to meet their parents.

Now, the school board wants to designate specific locations off-campus for students and parents to go during an emergency closing. The idea is to make it clear where parents can meet up with their children to mitigate the risk of additional chaos during an emergency.

The Seminole County School Safety and Security Director has a list of approved places in the county where students and parents can go to reunite in case of an emergency closing or evacuation at a campus.

Some area businesses have agreed to prepare and assist if called upon by the school district. The superintendent has approved of the plan, and now the school board must sign paperwork to officially put the plan into place.
