Security Patrol to Increase as York College Students Become Target of Robberies

Three York College students were the targets of robberies that occurred just outside of campus. In response, the university is working with local authorities to increase patrol in the area.

Students at York College were the targets of three robberies within the last week prompting campus security, YorkCity Police and Spring Garden Township Police to up their security.

All of the robberies occurred just outside of the campus gates. Police officials said in all three cases, students were walking alone during the early morning hours when they were targeted.

In one of the robberies,a 22-year-old student got shot. The victim is expected to recover, reported CBS 21.

“It is challenging when you have students living off campus because you can’t provide that same level of safety measures that you can in college-owned residences,” said Mary Dolheimer, York College director of communications, to the outlet.

In response to the robberies, the president of York College of Pennsylvania said the university will do more to be vigilant.

“We plan to increase patrols by our campus safety officers in the area between Jackson Street and Main Campus,” he said in a press release. “We financially support the York City Police substation on Jackson Street, which provides enhanced coverage to this particular area, and will continue other measures we previously put in place. We have also reached out today to our neighboring police jurisdictions to ask that they add patrols.”
