Students Tackle Classmate After He Brandishes a Gun During Class in California

A male student at La Habra High School in California was tackled by his classmates after he took out an unloaded gun in class.

A potential school shooting was averted after the gunman’s classmates tackled him and took away his gun.

La Habra High School in California went on lockdown Tuesday after a male student brandished a .22 caliber gun at the school, according to a statement from La Habra police.

"As far as we know at this point the gun was unloaded," said Lieutenant Brian Miller to CBS News. "Also, there was some type of a struggle between a couple students to get the gun away from this particular student."

Students told CBS Los Angeles the teen took out the gun in class, then pointed it at his classmates.

"I pick it up and I see that it's a gun, and it has like a white handle," one student, Dominic Carrillo, told CBS Los Angeles. "It's kind of small, so I was just like, 'Oh.' So I jump up and I run, and I go to the desk and I put it down. And the teacher just didn't know what to do."

Police officials said it is still unclear as to whether the student was trying to shoot up the school as the gun was not loaded.

School officials said no one was hurt during the incident.

The student was detained and it is unclear if he will be facing charges.
